I lost one of my best friends, Will, who was like a brother to me in 2007. I met Will in the United States Army while stationed in Germany prior to our departure to Baghdad, Iraq. During our service in Iraq we discussed the possibility of death on several occasions and often joked to each other about what we would want our families and friends to know, if for some reason, we did not make it back to the states. When I got out of the military, I went back to school; Will decided to take a civilian job in Afghanistan. It frustrates me that after making it through all the crazy non-sense that comes with being in the military; he would end up losing his life a month after returning back home safely to Florida.
Will was out celebrating his return to the states with two of his cousins. On their way home the driver of the vehicle must have not been paying close attention to the road and drove onto the median of the highway. The vehicle flipped several times and Will was thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene. The driver and passenger both lived and escaped with minor injuries. It was the first time I cried at anyone's funeral. Will was in the back seat asleep and never even saw it coming.
That is the one fact about the incident that continues to haunt me the most--HE NEVER EVEN SAW IT COMING.
He left behind a wife and a 3 year old son.
